Our Project “Improvement of the alimentory situation and living conditions in the Andes of Peru” is realized in ten communities in the districts Acraquia and Daniel Hernandez from December 2009 to August 2012, with financial support from the “Welthaus Bielefeld e.V.” (Germany).

In education programs and during home visits, we want to pass on appropriate forms of agriculture and animal husbandry, as to help the families building a healthy living environment, too. Furthermore we explain personal hygiene, the management of diseases and how to fight against malnutrition.

Health:

  • Health care and personal hygiene (hand washing, showering, vaccinations, men helping in the houshold …)
  • Recognition of signs of disease (During pregnancy, children under 5 years of age, women that gave birth)
  • Balanced nutrition

Healthy living environment:

  • Fireplace with flue
  • Latrines
  • Sink
  • Shower
  • Stables
  • Safe, running water

Appropriate agriculture

  • Organic fertilizer
  • Disease control using natural or organic products
  • Vegetable patches
  • Pasture grass
  • Livestock production
  • Fight against erosion of the soil (little farmin, sowing and planting around fields, level fields …)
  • Construction of irrigation ditches
  • Trickle irrigation

Our agricultural program:

The inadequate food supply of many Quechua Families living in extreme poverty, while a deterioration of the natural resources in their communities, is one of the gravest problems in the region Tayacaja.

Therefore our goal for the families, living in extreme poverty, is to provide a sufficient food supply and to expand their knowledge of sustainable agriculture.

The objectives are as follows:

First Specific Objective:

Re-Establishment and improving of soils, waters and forests as a basis for sustainable agriculture:

  • Increased productivity through more efficient agriculture, while reducing the planting area
  • Planting near the houses
  • Stubble fields, covering the fields with cut grass
  • Comunal, moderate and controlled use of meadows and forests
  • Protection against erosion of areas through reforestation
  • Construction of irrigation ditches for water distribution

Second Specific Objective:

Dissemination of sustainable agriculture through continuing education, evening classes, etc., to teach families the practices of organic farming

Third Specific Objective:

Increase harmoniously the livestock farming into the agriculture

  • Seed of pasture grasses
  • Harvesting and storage of the grasses
  • Breeding of animals in relation to the capacity of rangeland
  • Use and storage of livestock manure as fertilizer
  • Consumption of balanced nutrition home-produced

Fourth Specific Objective:

Creating of win-loss relations, marketing of surplus products

Fifth Specific Objective:

Communities do political lobbying for ecological agriculture and healthy nutrition in local, regional and national administrations.
