Project approved by Welthaus Bielefeld, Germany (December 2012 – November 2015)
In 2007 and 2009, supported by the FOKUS-group of Welthaus Bielefeld, we realized the project “Health of mothers & children and healthy living conditions in 5 Quechua communities” and increased to 10 communities and 172 families in the Acostambo district. The project consisted of the education and information of the indigenous people about health issues and the control of evitable diseases. For that, Agentes Comunitarios de Salud (community agents for health), mothers/fathers of families, the local authorities and the communities were capacitated. Afterwards, the families were supervised and watched over in coordination with the Red de Salud (health net) to ensure the health of mothers and children and healthy living conditions before leaving these tasks to the health centre of Acostambo after the end of the project.
Since 2001 ADECAP has been invigorating its intervention by applying the AIEPI-strategy (Atención Integrada a las Enfermedades Prevalentes de la Infancia – integrated attention to the prevailing childhood diseases). In this context, two big campaigns were developed: “Together we can save the children” and “Taking care of the mothers’ and children’s health”. As a result, the mothers’ knowledge, attitude and habits concerning health improved sustainably, which not only benefits the care of the children but also the care of the mothers and the community in general.
From September 2009 until August 2012, supported by Welthaus Bielefeld, we realized the project “Improvement of the feeding situation and living conditions in the Andes of Peru” in 250 families of 10 Quechua communities in the districts of Daniel Hernández and Acraquia. Its general objective was the improvement of the feeding situation and the health of the target group.
We carried out the activities with active participation of the families and communities and achieved the planned results.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:
To contribute to the improvement of the feeding situation and health and to the reduction of malnutrition of families who live in the indigenous Quechua communities of the Colcabamba district, Tayacaja province, Huancavelica region, Peru.
EXPECTED RESULTS OF THE PROJECT:
- Families increase their agricultural production by improving the soil, using agro-ecological methods and farming livestock.
- Sensitization and strengthening of the families’ knowledge about balanced nutrition.
- Families decrease the prevailing childhood diseases creating healthy living conditions for the children.
- The conditions of the families’ houses are health enhancing.
- The general activities for the dissemination of the results (trips to other communities for the purpose of exchange, general and district meetings and assemblies, dialogue with the local authorities and project management at a public and international level), community assemblies, promotion of the activities and systematization have been realized.
